Famous last words ... Toward the end of Jesus' earthly ministry it became inevitable: Jesus would physically be taken from their midst. What would happen to this movement so recently begun? If it was to be carried on with power, the little band of disciples stood in special need of prayer. So Jesus offered the High Priestly Prayer, and asked God to grant them the same marks of the Spirit we need today. In that prayer Jesus stressed three things, First, He wanted them to know the Christian Gospel, not simply as a pretty story, but as God's truth. Second, He prayed for them to be ready to bear witness to that truth by testifying in all areas of life. Finally, He desired they be a people who.find joy by fulfilling God's call.

Reflection on Sunday Gospel ... Mk 16:15-20 ... Tell who??? .. Let's re-read that well-known Great Commission. "Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature ... " Wait a minute. Does that mean I'm supposed to tell the story of Jesus to animals too? If I stop and talk about Jesus every .time a bird or bug crosses my path I won't have time to do anything else! (Ahhhhh, there's a lesson about priorities in there somewhere. Let's think a bit more.) And what good will the good news do my poodle? (Well, it might not do the creature much good, but think how well you'll be prepared the next time you getto tell a human!) Pardon the humorous approach but it's all a matter of perspective. Jesus gave us a general com mand "go and tell" and He left the details up to us. We decide how big the world we inhabit is: two or three cities, a few blocks of buildings or perhaps the four walls of a hospital room. And we decide what "creatures" inhabit that world. But wherever we mark the boundaries the telling is still up to us. We have been given the honor of sharing Jesus' story. If we don't speak, who will? The Bible says that if we do not offer praise to God, the very rocks will cry out. Who knows? Maybe the cat next door is already practicing his sermon. ©Copyright 2006 C L Enterprises

Feast of the Ascension is this Sunday ... May 28

 • We will meet again ... By H. Suso ... When the living presence of Jesus was taken away from His own, it did not mean they would have less of Jesus. Instead they would have Jesus in a sweeter, more intimate, more divine way. For when our Lord rose up to heaven, He took with Him all their hearts, minds and love. So is it with us. He is gone up to heaven, into the bosom ofthe Father, into the Father's love, and we ascend up there with Him, resting where He rests. In heaven there is no separation, but one life, one existence, we are one with our

Lord as He is one with the Father. And this promised reunion makes every day sweeter.

J. Ellerton said ... The parting blessing of our Lord was changed in the moment of its utterance into a pledge of eternal love, of unfailing and ever-watchful care for the well-being of His people. • We need your assistance ... The renovation for the Priests' House has begun. Please help us! I know we have many gifted people in our community. Please call Jesse Blanchard (cell: 985860-8005, home: 985-532-6122) and Ronnie Sampey (cell: 985226-3766, home: 985-532-2516) to share your time and talents. May the Lord reward your kindness!

Day of Prayer and Fasting .... The Bishops of Louisiana has dedicated, June 2, 2006, first Friday, as a Day of Prayer and Fasting for protection against major hurricanes this season. As Bishop Jacobs said, "' have proposed to the Bishops ofthe State of Louisiana that we join together in a Day of Prayer and Fasting for protection against major hurricanes this season. As a result, Friday, June 2, 2006, has been designated as such a day for the State of Louisiana .... , am sure that you will agree with me that we don't need another major hurricane in our state and that we need to intercede before God for His intervention and protection. What a powerful witness this will be, not only to our people, but also to the general public."

May 29 is Memorial Day ... Thomas Bailey Aldrich said ... 'With the tears this Land has shed their graves should ever be green."

Summoned home!

The call has sounded

Bidding a soldier his warfare cease And the song of angels resounding Welcomes a warrior to eternal peace.

Praise the Lord From earthly struggles

This brave soul has found release Strife and sorrow over

The Lord's true faithful soldier

Has been called to go from the ranks below To the conquering host above

·Our Lady of Wisdom ... pray for us!

• All for the Greater Glory of God!

Let me follow His call

The Savior of men came to seek and to save The souls who were lost to the good

His Spirit was moved

for the world which He loved

With the boundless com passion of God

O Savior of men, touch my spirit again And grant that this servant may do

The work still unfinished, your word to proclaim To tell all the world about You

CURSILLO MOVEMENT OF THE DIOCESE OF HOUMA-THIBODAUX

CURSILLO is a Spanish word meaning short course. This experience begins with a three-day weekend on a Thursday evening, ending on Sunday afternoon. This is done through an atmosphere of friendship and joy, as you learn: 1) an encounter with yourself; 2) an encounter with God; 3) an encounter with other people Its objective is to create Christian groups that work together to become agents for Parish/Community Evangelization after the weekend experience.

If you are interested in making a weekend orwould like further information, please contact Chris and Kathy Louviere @ 4466801 or 537-6025 or Terry and Jane/ Chiasson @ 532-2635. The next Women's Weekend is scheduled for June 8th - 11th, 2006.

DAY OF PRAYER AND FASTING

As we approach a new hurricane season with the experience of last year, Bishop Sam Jacobs has proposed to the Bishops of the State of Louisiana that we join together in a Day of Prayer and Fasting for protection against major hurricanes this season. As a result, Friday, June 2, 2006 has been designated as such a day for the State by the Bishops.

We are sure that everyone agrees that we do not need another major hurricane in our state and that we need to intercede before God for his intervention and protection. What a powerful witness this will be, not only to our people, but also to the general public.

        Why do Catholics

honor Mary so much?

Dear Padre,

What do we Catholics really believe about the Virgin Mary? Protestants don't seem to understand why we have such devotion to her, and I'm not really sure I do either.   Monica B.

Dear Monica,

In this short space, I cannot give a really complete answer to your questions, since many volumes have been written about the Blessed Mother. There are four dogmas or articles of faith about Mary.

The Immaculate Conception is one of these dogmas. We believe that Mary was preserved from original sin from the moment of her conception. The perpetual virginity of Mary is another article of faith. We believe that God preserved her virginity, even though she conceived by the Holy Spirit and gave birth to Jesus. She was a virgin at the conception of Jesus and remained a virgin her whole life. We believe that Mary is the Mother of God, which is a third dogma about the Blessed Virgin. Finally, we believe that Mary was assumed into heaven, body and soul.

One way to think about Mary is that, like all of us~ she had a call or vocation from God. In order for her to fulfill her vocation faithfully, all the elements in these four dogmas were necessary. God, therefore, gave them to her. God always makes sure we have what we need to fulfill our vocation, no matter how extraordinary the vocation or the gifts may be.

Father Joseph Nolen, C.Ss.R
